AMPHIBIAN: Greece's 12-Day Expedition Where the Human Body Is the Laboratory

AMPHIBIAN is a 12-day, five-discipline expedition across all 13 regions of Greece, from Ormenio in the north to Gavdos in the south. Led by Greek physician, physiologist and endurance athlete Giorgos Tsianos — the first Greek to summit Everest via the north route, an English Channel swimmer, and a Marathon des Sables finisher — the project turns the human body into a live field laboratory. Using wearable sensors, smart garments, GPS, environmental monitors and AI-backed digital platforms, the team will collect and transmit real-time biometric data on cardiovascular and respiratory function, thermoregulation, oxygenation, glycemic dynamics, movement, fatigue and recovery. The Greek Ministry of Digital Governance and AI is funding the initiative through the Hellenism Foundation. The core value lies in proving that science, wearable technology and digital communication can work together outside the laboratory. But the lasting impact depends on whether the data becomes open science, peer-reviewed research and real health or sports policy — or merely a spectacular one-off media story.
